Scare the Bullies: Psalms 86

14 O God, insolent men have risen up against me;
a band of ruthless men seeks my life,
and they do not set you before them.
15 But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
16 Turn to me and be gracious to me;
give your strength to your servant,
and save the son of your maidservant.
17 Show me a sign of your favor,
that those who hate me may see and be put to shame
because you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

Ps. 86:14-17, ESV

This the last of three parts, and we should be impressed with its diversity. There are vista points here, where we can stop and wonder. I remember lounging in the California redwoods, just meandering and soaking it in. It basically undid me. And after awhile, I found it hard to speak. (Itself a minor miracle!)

But scripture can do this as well. When we really start looking, and praying, and meditating we start to appreciate all the Father has done for us. And it’s not just “deep thinkers,” who can do this.  Actually, deep thinking is a liability. It is the simple, the humble, the slow, those who have absurd patience– they are the ones who can do some serious reflecting. Children do it best I think.

Commentary

V. 14, is pretty much David’s reality. He is on Satan’s “hit list.” He has a “contract’ on his life. He must deal with this as he moves through his day. I can imagine that this could be quite corrosive and detrimental to your soul; your heart and your mind. He must have thought, ‘Can I really trust this person, does he have a dagger?’ I would have been a mess, twisted up with paranoia and fear.

V. 15, each word used in this verse is quite precise, each phrase carefully used. This is not David flattering God, it is not “boot-licking” mush. Rather, this verse is an accurate portrayal of the Lord God’s character. It is David’s appraisal of how he has experienced God, the things he has found out about Him. David has a long history with the Father, and he reminds himself of how good God really was.

V. 16, in this verse we see David appealing to God on the basis of relationship. Also, David speaks of a kind of “future grace.” Yes, good things have happened in his life, God things. But that isn’t enough for the present moment, and the future. David needs freshness, a grace tailored just for today, custom built.

David’s source for his survival is in God’s cupboards. He knows this, and boldly steps up and asks for it. Interestingly David doesn’t come as an anointed king, having a majestic aura. When he refers to himself, it is as ”the son of your maidservant.”

V. 17, “The Message” Bible is interesting in how it translates this particular verse:

“Make a show of how much you love me
so the bullies who hate me will stand there slack-jawed,
As you, God, gently and powerfully
put me back on my feet.”

I wrote this on Feb. 21, 2012 and it was posted on my second website, “Psalmslife.com.” If you happen to like this kind of teaching, there is a “whole boatload” on that site, 70-80 posts just on the Psalms. I would be honored if you would check it out.  –B.

Several Things I Want You to Know

The snow that you see falling is a simple gift from  Wordpress.com who hosts the site Brokenbelievers.  It was an option, and I liked it.  So, whether you like it or not.  The snow will fall on your screen.  Get out your shovel.

We also have just surpassed 90,000 hits.  That’s a whole lot of clicks.  It seems very unreal and quite improbable.  Brokenbelievers is positioned to be a real factor in the lives of struggling believers, many who have a serious mental illness.

We also have just hit 900 posts.  So 900 times, something of substance has been posted on BB.  This is basically a library that you can draw on.  From my firsthand position, a whole lot of good things are now available.  You can tap them all.

I’m so glad that I can do something that really matters.  And that is how I really feel.  I have just started a spanking new blog that is studying the Psalms.  You can find it at http://www.psalmslife.com.  It’s new, but I sense a momentum building from eager hearts.  Please look at it, and let me know what you think.

When you feel it’s appropriate and OK, please leave a response in the reply action after each post.  These are like mini-transfusions and I am grateful for each and everyone.  I do listen, and am hoping to be quite responsive to your comments.  Your email address is most sacred, it will never go beyond me.

Thank you for your willingness to read, and then care.  You are special and you bless me.

60,000 Visits for BB

60 K!

More than 60,000 hits.  Since August, 2009 we have been slowly building some momentum, and our readership has come from every continent in the world (except Antarctica— the penguin vote is not tabulated.)

More than anything, I’m aware of the blessing and strength that this site tries to impart.  Originally, the vision for brokenbelievers.com was directed at Christians dealing with mental illness.  But because of the tremendous need, I extended the scope of this site to include strugglers and rascals.  People that the Church has closed its doors.  Anyone on the margins, the “black cats” and the “tax-collecters,” and the harlots.  And all failures!

BB has linked up with “Faithful Bloggers,” a few months ago.  It provides BB with a much needed guidance and support.  If you have your own blog, just click on the logo on the BB Home Page. I have also added a link to a side ministry of old classic CCM.  So much can be added to that “ministry” and we will try to help the aficionados of classic Christian music and their requests.

Back to the numbers of BB.  Right now we are averaging almost 200 hits everyday.  (These are coming from almost 200 individual computers.)  Some bloggers do over 100x this, per day, on their sites.  But I’m quite happy with were we are at; and that many hearts that get blessed.

One more thought, I am looking for another person who feels led into a ministry like BB.  A posted teaching, once or twice a week.  Heart and spirit are more important than polished skill.  Just hit me with what your thinking, we can pray.  I would ask for a committment of one year. I’m at flash99603@hotmail.com.

Blessings on you, and thank you for supporting BB, esp. w/prayer.

Finally–A BB Milestone

______________

Since September 23, 2009–May 2, 2011 we have reached 50,000 distinct hits on Broken Believers.

We have come a very long way.  On BB first day we had 10 hits,  since than we have climbed very steadily.  Our best day was just a few days ago—the total hits was 712 for the day.  Right now our average is about 180 distinct views a day.  (Sometimes a little less, but often a bit more.)

This ministry to Christians with a mental illness is a rarity indeed.  I look and look and have never found a blog like this with such a ministry focus for these struggling believers.  And the appeal is broader than mental illnesses.  People with other issues benefit by this blog.

I beseech you to pray for the people who come to BB.  Pray for the blog itself, and for me as I battle my own issues.  I have no illusions or self-deception about my own heart condition and dealings I’m working through.  I am most certainly a “broken believer.”

I continue to put together a daily post.  I’ve been somewhat weary the last few weeks.  FYI, I receive no financial help from the BB ministry, rather I have paid the incidentials out of my own pocket.  I guess I just needed to make it clear.

I so hope you’ll continue to make BB a regular stop on your travels.  And if you should read something to merit sending me an email, I’d love it.
