“Go forth today, by the help of God’s Spirit, vowing and declaring that in life – come poverty, come wealth, in death – come pain or come what may, you are and ever must be the Lord’s. For this is written on your heart, “We love Him because He first loved us,” 1 John 4:19.
–Charles Spurgeon
“…but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
“Here is a simple rule of thumb for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you; then grab the initiative and do it for them! If you only love the lovable, do you expect a pat on the back? Run-of-the-mill sinners do that.”
Luke 6:31-32, MSG
Sometimes it seems, I hit the switch, and shut it all down. Essentially, I get wrapped up with one of my favorite sins and soon I turn off my faith, unplugging myself from the wall. I have a desire to escape from what I see as restrictions that I believe faith brings me. I want to have fun–I don’t want to pray, or read the Bible.
Actually I can do this subtly. I just raise the volume of my sinful desires, and try to drown out that still small voice. I can maintain a holy life for my Christian friends, while I enjoy the pleasures of my favorite sins. Sins or holiness, I want to go for both– but the reality is I just get one.
There is still a voice that is speaking profoundly. “And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.” Our particular concepts of Christianity so rarely include this–“the golden rule.” In my own mind, I diminish this as a little bit antiquated. I will rarely feel its pinch or pull. It is never a topic of serious thought or meditation. It seems that it has become what I call–“an optional truth.” It is very much real, but it is not connected to me in my daily walk.
Treating others, the very way you want to be treated—do this! Love other people outrageously and deeply; because you like it when they do this to you. There is reciprocal action here, a sort of spiritual circle of kindness. Our vernacular says, “What goes around, comes around.” And it certainly has a ring of truth in it.
All too often we have a version of Christianity that has had its teeth pulled. We have tamed it, and brought the sharp teeth of the faith under our personal decision-making process. The wildness of a true faith is domesticated and ‘house-broken.’ And we start the rush to unplug things. The golden rule gets detached right away.
As I struggle as a mentally ill Christian, it is mandatory that the truth be lifted up in my life. I can become quite disturbed and manipulated by life’s dealings. My issues of paranoia and delusion cripple me, or they could become the step-stool for those wonderous things on the shelf of grace.
Dear ones, use your illness to reach for the best, live this and change your world.
“But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.”
Matthew 13:16, ESV
There is a vast audio ocean that surrounds us. Did you know that in the room where you are reading this, that there are cartoons, music, mysteries, and concerts going on? You just don’t see or hear them unless you have your radio or television tuned in to the right frequency. We live in the golden age of Bluetooth and cell phones. (Oh my!)
There is a frequency that we must lock into, where we can hear important things (or block-out confusing sounds.) God is so into ‘communicating.’ We understand He desires us to communicate with Him. He yearns for a dialogue with us, just like He had once a long time ago in the early chapters of Genesis.
Knowing that I’ve been created in imago dei. I ponder the visible, which is a simple shadow of the real world. Mankind in general, creates and communicates–this is what we do–because it’s how God acts. In a certain sense, you might say we are miniaturized versions of Him. Afterall, we are in His image.
He is always speaking, but we’re not always listening.
The attribute of listening is amazingly profound. Often, I listen to my local radio station while I’m driving in my car. When I drive away from the radio tower, the signal gets weaker and weaker. But if I turn the car around and drive back into town, the signal becomes stronger and I can hear it again.
In the same way, we stop hearing God when we drift away from Him. But if we will turn around and come back to Him, we’ll hear His voice again. The closer we are to God, the clearer we can hear Him. “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you”(James 4:8).
There are so many that are outside our walls. Those who are blinded and confused by the Church and the gospel.
People are for the most part not this blatant or obvious in their pain. But it is what they are asking that tunes us in. “Where?”
Humans have been created with a special spot inside them. This place is designed by our Creator for his use only. Life just doesn’t make sense unless he is the center. Christians are just people who are trying to be fueled by God’s Spirit.
Answers abound to questions unasked. Confusion is rampant and it seems no one can get a unified direction for his companions. This is precisely why the Bible brings a piercing and clear call to the children of man. Its promises are not dated, they are not obsolete.
They are many who have gone before us, thousands of generations who have found light and solace for darkened and wounded hearts. They testify to us of the spiritual reality that can be found in God and in his Word. We are not called to perfection, but a real obedience of faith and love.
At this throbbing moment in history, Jesus is calling so many to “follow”.
He is populating eternity with beggars, the sick, the poor the addicted. He loves “sinners”. He loves the mentally ill. The Bible tells us, “that he ever lives to make intercession for them”.
You have a purpose, and life does have clear meaning. Don’t lose hope and don’t try to fill yourself with foolish and empty pursuits. Come to Jesus, ask for forgiveness. Find the people that will help solidify and confirm your decision. Feel free to contact me about your decision to follow Jesus.
“Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6
